Graz ([ˈɡʁaːt͡s]) is an Austrian city, capital of the federated state of stretch (in German: Steiermark). It is the second largest city in the country. University City par excellence, was appointed European capital of culture in 2003.
Graz is located on the banks of the Mura River to the southeast of Austria. It is located 189 kilometers from Vienna, the capital of the country. It borders the north with Grackorn, Stattegg and Weinitzen; to the east with Kainbach Bei Graz, Hart Bei Graz and Raaba; to the south with Gössendorf, Feldkirchen Bei Graz, Seiersberg and Unterpremstätten, and to the west with Attendorf and Thal.
The first mention of the city appeared in a document written by the Margrave de Ciria Leopoldo I. It is currently not available for the original although there is a copy of the fifteenth century.
